To every eye that beholds her frame, she connotes a vivid picture... of what cosmetic surgery is just all about. Even for a woman who shares the same body features as hers, she imposes a compelling task of getting one glued to her beautiful frame and most especially her boobs which to her are self imposed assets.
Although She is not a medical personnel, yet pretty Modupe Ozolua’s utmost desire is to make an indelible mark on the lives of men, women and children in need of surgical attention. Hence, the birth of her foundation: "Body Enhancement Annual Re-constructive Surgery(BEARS)".
The foundation which was established barely eight years ago, is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) with a brief collaboration with the Child Care Trust (the pet project of late Mrs Stella Obasanjo).
The vision, according to Ozolua, is aimed at using plastic surgery and other specialties to correct deformities of the affluent and the less-privileged, particularly.
But her focus on the less-privileged was pre-determined. In her experience of almost a decade she observed that, not many Nigerians could afford the cost of having surgical operations even when they have pressurizing needs for it. According to her, while a lot of people who are financially comfortable easily get their surgical needs met, many others don’t due to financial constraints. It was in order to fill this yearning gap that she established BEARS.
This expressly debunked the popular notion that Ozolua’s focus is merely boobs-orientated. In her words, the foundation which was born out of a need, had served and will continue to help children with congenital defects while they are still young and prone to easy correction.
Besides children, her commitment is also towards the male folks in the areas of body firmness and nose cartilaging. She had also, through the foundation, helped Nigerians especially desiring women, to achieve appreciable hips irrespective of their nationality.
"Body enhancement is not just about the breasts, it is more than that. Although we are mostly patronised by women, we also have a lot of male clients" she said.
Tracing the genesis of the mission, Ozolua said, the idea was born out of her desire for a more obvious breasts that do not need the assistance of any brazier whether special or not, to get them stand. At that time, she had no intention of having a foundation or an outfit that will be doing same for others.
"I was particular about myself. I needed to increase my breasts just to satisfy myself. I never knew it will become a big thing like this,’’ she said.
According to her, her aunties and female associates around her prompted her into the beauty project.
When she returned from the United States of America to Nigeria in December 2000, she already had her mind set for the business. She said "the outfit took off officially on February 2001 and within its few months of operation, it blew out in a full blast."
She said that at the onset it was a bit challenging because a lot of people didn’t buy the whole idea of body enhancement. The whole idea was strange and very alien to the African culture but to her surprise a lot of people started coming for reconstruction of one part of their body or the other,"
For her, life does not have to end or get boring just because a woman is aged or have been through series of child birth. Culture or no culture, she believes one must live an interesting life to appeal to herself and her spouse all through her entire life.
Even when she experienced a little setback on the business due to the death of Nigeria’s former First Lady, Stella Obasanjo, she claimed business had been good.
Speaking on the achievements of BEARS, Ozolua recalled making remarkable impacts. She said her involvement with kids in 2003 took off with surgery of children with cleft lips and following this success, in 2004 the Edo State government invited the foundation to the aid of some victims of kerosene explosion of 2001. Out of the 43 of theses victims she said seven did not benefit from the gesture due to some peculiar reasons which included health concerns. The remaining 36, she noted took part in the successful surgery.
"Relieving the fear of many about the safety or the surgery, especially the one that concerns the breast, the mother of one stated emphatically that "it has no death sanction going with it." As a way of convincing people she had her own breasts done.
Meanwhile her offer doesn’t transcend everyone. She considers the ages of her prospective clients before delivering unto the operation. Other common patterns she observed keeping strictly to, is also about the aspect of nose surgery.
She however appealed to more comfortable individuals and corporate bodies including the state and Federal Government to give their support to the foundation more than before.
