If you live in a home which suffers badly with high humidity then you may want to consider purchasing a dehumidifier. High humidity can cause an overgrowth of mold which can cause some very serious health problems. The best way to combat this is to not allow the mold to grow, or to kill it in the early stages. The best preventative is a dehumidifier.
The Purpose of a Dehumidifier
Basically, a dehumidifier is a machine that helps to remove the humidity from your home. There are several different types of dehumidifiers. Learn about the differences and decide which would be the best one for your place.
Chemical Absorbent Dehumidifiers are meant to be used in warmer areas. A chemical drying agent absorbs water from the air.
Heat Pump Dehumidifiers are the most common units used within the home. The fan within the dehumidifier draws the air inward then passed along a cold coil that removes the water from the air, much like an air conditioner does.
Dehumidifying Ventilators are generally used within a basement type setting. These use an exhaust fan and a sensor controller. Because they can depressurize a room they are more dangerous. It’s always best to use this type in a well ventilated area.
The Differences between Dehumidifiers
Each dehumidifier can hold a different amount of water. If you have high humidity then you will need a dehumidifier that has a large water capacity.
If on the other hand you only suffer from slight humidity then you will only need a dehumidifier with a small water capacity and therefore that will also be cheaper.
However for the home 40 pints of water is usually a better figure and it is unlikely that you will need a dehumidifier within the home that holds more than that.
Another factor to consider is that all dehumidifiers will have different functions. Generally you want to look for a dehumidifier that has the following features:
Auto shut off which is useful as it will automatically shut the dehumidifier off when it becomes full.
Adjustable humidistat is for homes that will have different humidity levels throughout the day.
Automatic reset works to automatically restart the unit when the drain pan has been emptied. It is a great time-saver.
Auto signal light let’s you know that the unit is in proper working condition. This is important if you need the dehumidifier to run effectively most of the time. Making sure it’s running correctly will save you from having to deal with the pitfalls of what humidity can do to a home.
Sticking to Your Budget
With dehumidifiers you get what you pay for. Be careful when choosing your unit. Cheaper is not always better. If your home has a high humidity level then purchase a dehumidifier which has a larger water capacity. Get the best model you can afford.
Choosing the right dehumidifier to suit your needs can be complicated if you do not understand much about the different types available. Research as much as you can about the different types, models and brands.
