Mantel clocks are small timepieces that we put on top of tables, desks or fireplaces. There are many manufacturers of mantel clocks including Howard Miller, Hermle, Bulova, Ridgeway, Timeworks and Uttermost. In terms of functionality, there are chiming, pendulum, battery-powered, and key wound types. For style, the traditional tambour and bracketed are available .Though small in size, mantel clocks provide a classy and graceful decor to your room. They can fit many places in the room without any need for installation activities such as drilling or punching.
Mantel clocks were invented in the 1300’s but back then they were very cumbersome. By the 1500’s, they had been perfected with brass cases, and then by the 1600s, made from exquisite wooden material with decorative engravings.
Mantel clocks got their name from the traditional fireplace. At the time of invention, the home didn’t have as much furniture as today. So these clocks were specifically made to be placed upon the mantel which is the wood work of the fireplace.
Mantel clocks come in three main designs. The tambour looks like a drum and has a big base. The arched type has the base joined to the neck of the clock case. The anniversary style has brass fixtures in glass. They take a long time to lose power hence their name anniversary. The maritime is another style and this one has enhanced features like barometers. The lantern-shaped mantel clock has a hinge to enable you carry it around easily.
These clocks have many uses. You can buy them to decorate your home. They make great decor for both small and large halls. Aside from personal use, mantel clocks serve as exquisite gift items for a friend. Brightly colored, mechanical clocks make good choices in this case. There are even some clocks that come decorated with marine, city, sports or even summer themes. You can easily pick a choice to suit the hobby, occupation, or interests of the friend. People collect these timepieces for resale or personal entertainment. You can buy them from car boot sales or from eBay auctions.
