A large percentage of people now spend some time of their working week, working from home. It is therefore essential to create a working area that is not only practical and comfortable, but also fits in with the rest of your home. Not everyone will have a dedicated office or room to work from, so the furniture that is selected must make the most of whatever space is available.

What do you need for your home office?

The most important part of any home office will be the computer desk, but other pieces of furniture should not be overlooked. Bookcases can be used as a useful storage solution for important documents and files, also helping to keeping a clutter free desk. Similarly, cabinets are a perfect way to keep your documents stored and organised. But also consider that your home office furniture is not just for your work needs, they are also ideal for a children's bedroom or for the family PC or laptop. If you are looking for something a bit larger than a desk, you could even consider a dining table.

Choosing your home office furniture

Think about how you work. Do you like to sit down with a pen and pad, or do you prefer sitting at a computer screen? This will determine the size of the computer desk that will be required. Think about what you need. Consider if you need additional space for a printer, scanner or a number of files.

What style are you looking for?

There are a vast amount of home office furniture styles, from oak, pine, painted wood, or metal. If the desk is going to be set up in an existing room in the house, make you that it co-ordinates with the existing style of the room.

What space do you have available?

Once you have compiled a list of what it is you need, you can begin to look at what you can fit into the available space. If the space is limited, there are many space saving computer desks and work stations. It is important to think about the space once the item of furniture is present in the room. Make sure you have space to open doors and walk around the room.

Obviously everyone has different tastes and different homes will have varying furniture styles. Some people prefer wooden furniture, whilst others would rather buy metal and chrome objects. There are thousands of different home computer desks available to buy, all with different styles and in varying price brackets, so it is always a good idea to shop around before you buy.
