Many people will be holidaying in the UK this year; the financial climate has meant that the lofty prices we need to pay in order to get a flight abroad are out of many peoples’ price range. But with decent weather gracing us already this summer, many families are quite happy to enjoy the delights that the UK has to offer.

Camping and caravanning is a long standing tradition for lots of UK holidaymakers, with us even celebrating a national camping and caravanning week as well as there being a number of clubs and associations to boot. For most, it’s a case of finding a suitable site at the destination of choice and picking a caravan to suit the individual needs of the holidaymakers. However if the holidaymaker is luck enough to own their own caravan thoughts need to turn to other important factors such as the vehicle used to tow the caravan.

As a caravan owner, knowing whether your car is up to the task of towing is important and below are three of the most popular four wheel drive cars that might be best suited to taking you away this year:

The Land Rover Discovery

Many people will opt for the larger, celeb-driven brother of this car; the Range Rover. But the Discovery can match the pricier Range Rover in the luxury stakes. Also this model is ideal for off-roading so you can find that perfect camping spot no matter what terrain it lies on or the route to get there. The newest iteration of the Discovery is regarded by many as much more reliable than previous models too.

The Volkswagen Touareg

Even the name suits the use for this caravan hauling 4x4, Touareg is the name of an African nomadic tribe, so already it gives you the idea it is suitable for hauling your "tribe" around. Like many other new 4x4s it is very stylish and with the new R50 model it can generate up to 350 bhp. The elevated driving position and deceptively sleek appearance mean that the Touareg is ideal for those wanting a 4x4 but not wanting to sacrifice on style.

The Audi Q7

Another of the new breed of 4x4 is the Audi Q7, similar in specification and build to the VW model the Q7 has a monster 3.0 litre engine and it’s first off-roader since completing many years developing four wheel drive transmissions. Whilst it’s in theory an off-road vehicle it looks far too good to go splashing in the snow and mud. With 7 seats it can certainly transport a family with ease as well as having more than adequate power to haul a caravan up even the steepest hill.

These three cars are perfect for the task of caravan towing but do consider all factors when choosing a car. It’s also a good idea to consult the caravan manufacturer for recommendations as well as shopping around between car and 4x4 manufacturers. Alternatively you could consider investing in a motorhome!
