First off, to all who fear the words "metal" and "guitar" in the same phrase, I say DON’T let the name fool you. Now that we have that out of the way, let us discuss Doug Marks’ wonderful series of guitar lessons titled "Metal Method". Now grant you, the title alone evokes images of tortured, fire breathing dragons rising from a prehistoric abyss, laying claim to all virgins, all the while, screaming falsetto vocals encased in pleather and arm studding lock in combat with equally screaming electric guitars (that resemble instruments of desolation rather than instruments of music) in that eternal quest to claim the coveted title of "Decibel Emperor"!

BUT!

The truth is much less steeped in caricature heavy metal fiction, and much more grounded in REAL music theory, technique and above all; a set curriculum!

That last one should grab you. Very few guitar instructors, and I mean FEW, present an organized detailed step by step approach to guitar lessons. In short, most lessons are haphazard and unorganized at best. Usually just bits and pieces of information from all over the place, but no unification whatsoever.

Here is where Metal Method Online is COMPLETELY different. MMO, is a fully realized course of guitar study that is set up exactly as a college curriculum would be. There are levels, stages of advancement with exams along the way…and a very concrete way of monitoring your progress. Much like the belt system in many martial arts classes. A thorough, led by the hand systematic approach is the order of the day. Doug Marks, the inventor of this system has been teaching with this approach for over 25 years. He was doing this WAY before the internet, way before iPods, way before…well, you get the idea.

Times may change, but classic methods if learning are timeless!

Today, with all of the online information, there are limitless bits of guitar information, but fat little is that for a struggling beginner who doesn’t know what he or she needs to know, and therefore cannot put it all together! Any discipline, is taught through steps and levels, with each succeeding step building from the previous one. Why people think guitar (or any musical instrument for that matter) is different is beyond me. If anything, with the limitless combinations, and limitless mathematical possibilities, music is one of the most intricate skills one can start. A strategically laid out course is not only convenient. It is CRITICAL!

Fortunately Metal Method Online has you covered, from raw beginner all the way to seasoned professional. The name might imply only hard rockers allowed, but in actuality, the information presented is UNIVERSAL. Regardless of what guitar style you want to play, the language of music is universal! For example, a G# harmonic minor scale played over G#mi/maj7 is the same on guitar as it is on piano and so forth. But chances are, that if the above names and numbers mean nothing to you….you would do well to check out a complete course on guitar, that will teach you everything from the open string notes on your guitar coupled with basic open chords, all the way to advanced chord theory where names like Ab13#5b7 and Bb Neopolitan scales will make musical sense to you, and not sound like some chemical formula to clean your carpet with! For my vote, Metal Method Online is THE most complete guitar course I have seen to date!
