A kitchen table can serve a variety of functions. First and most obviously, it is an extra surface where you can extend your culinary work, using it for chopping mixing, and even just spreading out the various utensils you will use in the course of food preparation.

However perhaps even more important, a kitchen table is a place for people to gather. It is a central location, where friends and family can come and sit, enjoying one another company amongst the fresh aromas and warm sensations of the kitchen. It’s a social piece that makes the entire space more inviting and friendly.

The size, shape, and nature of any table that you bring into the kitchen will be determined by the space available in the room. If your kitchen is expansive, you will of course have a lot more options. However if room is tight, you will have to choose a table that fits into the extra space available.

In general a round table will take up less space than a square one. Round tables don’t have corners jutting out in all directions. However, if you have a free ninety degree corner in the kitchen, then a square table may be more appropriate, as it will be able to jut up perfectly into that corner.

One thing you have to be careful of is to not use a table which takes up too much floor space. It is important that the kitchen flows, and that you are able to move freely throughout the space, to be able to do the culinary work that needs to be accomplished.

If space is limited, you might want to go with a small bistro table, or even a wall counter, rather than a full out table. These are smaller pieces that can be pushed to the side, leaving plenty of room to work throughout the space.

In a pinch, you always have the option of going with a temporary table. Folding tables, or even pieces with a fold out leaf, allow you to suit the room to the occasion, taking up as much space as you want, and then folding them away when its time to turn your kitchen back into a work space.

A kitchen table is a wonderful accessory that gives you more room to work, and invites social gatherings to take place within the kitchen area. However you have to be sure to match the size and shape of the table to the room that you have available.
