Australia is world-famous for her wealth of botanical and zoological offerings that can be found nowhere else on the planet. This one-of-a-kind characteristic applies to her citizens as well, who are some of the most hospitable and entertaining people anywhere. And the wonderful result of this plethora of natural resources is some of the most unique and memorable foods in the world.
Not only are the traditional grilles and fish and chips shops plentiful across the continent, but the bounty of exotic foreign dishes available by way of the Asian and Mediterranean influences in the popular culture bring a monumental palette of menus to choose from.
Seafood, of course, can be had in all of its wonderful varieties of shrimp, lobster, abalone, kingfish, oysters, and barramundi. The cattle and sheep population of Australia are also known around the world as some of the finest sources of beef and lamb available anywhere. What is often overlooked about the foods of Australia is the long and storied history of vegetarianism here. The first society of vegetarians was formed in Melbourne in 1886, and the tradition of using the multitude of flora indigenous to Australia as part of the fine food choices is carried on proudly by many of her citizens today.
The equally traditional habit of firing up the grille is enjoyed all across this intriguing country. Nowhere is a barby appreciated more than in Australia, and the cornucopia of grilled foods that are available here will delight anyone’s taste buds. Beef, lamb, and seafood are naturally included in any chef’s offerings, as are just about any other edible creature that walks, swims, or crawls. Australians definitely know how to marinate, season, and grille with an expertise born of centuries of practice.
The eastern shores of the world renowned Gold Coast are teeming with many epicurian delights. The choice of chefs, cuisines, and restaurants is unparalleled anywhere, regardless of the taste of the diner. Whether one prefers the high-end richness of the Absynthe at Queensland in the heart of Surfer’s Paradise, the enticing flavors of Lebanese foods at the Al Madina restaurant in Castle Hill at Sydney, or the unforgettable taste of Asia at Ainoya’s Japanese restaurant in Kirribilli at Sydney, there is a menu sure to please any palate.
Heading north up the coast to Brisbane, one will find all of this and more to tickle the fancy of any gourmet. A breathtaking view of the Brisbane River can be taken in while dining on some of the best steak and prawns at the Tonic on Oxford or steamed noodles and rice paper rolls at the Wang Dynasty. The peak of elegance and fine foods can be enjoyed at Timmy’s in Southbank, which features some of the best Tasmanian un-oaked wines to be found. The annual River Fire celebration each September provides the chance to take in the river views, sample cuisine from around the world, and enjoy the warm hospitality of the Australian people. The richness of the foods is matched only by the splendor and overwhelming magnitude of bountiful environment here.
