The car rental business is just that, it is a business and they are in it to make money. Of course, they make money on the vehicle rental, but there are ways they have found to make money above and beyond that initial amount; being aware of these additional charges, can help you to save money on your next car rental.
GAS " When you return your vehicle make sure to fill it up. If the company has to fill the tank up for you they will charge you an exorbitant amount per gallon of gas. Always ask them to fill the tank before you take it out and then be sure to fill it up before you bring it back.
ADDITIONAL CHARGES " You need to realize that the initial rate you are quoted is actually less than you are your going to pay. Their will be additional taxes and surcharges, and if you are renting in a town or city that has a luxury tax, then there will be an even larger tax amount added. Be sure that with each rate you are quoted that you find out whether it is with or without the taxes and surcharges and if it is without ask them to quote you the total amount you will be charged per day. This way you wont have any surprises when you return your vehicle.
TIME FRAME " Make sure that you check out the difference between days when you are picking up and dropping off your rental vehicle. You will find that a rental on a Friday morning will run you more than a rental on a Thursday night, because Friday is considered a weekend rental, but on Thursday you will be getting the regular daily rate. Sometimes changing your car rental by only a few hours can save you quite a bit of money. Also, most companies offer 5 and 7 day rental rates so if you are considering renting for 4 days, check it out it may wind up costing you less to keep it for 5 days.
Right now we are struggling in this economy. Make sure to read this entire article and apply it when you are renting your next vehicle. Even if it only saves you a few dollars, every dollar seems to help.
