Many salons ask me, "How do I recruit and hire stylists?" Well, it's not that complicated but as they say, the devil is in the details.

I suggest you do the following 5 things;

  1. Create a clear job description

  2. Explain future advancement

  3. Do team interviewing

  4. Write interesting recruiting ads.

  5. Put the message out

Let me explain each one of them to you in more detail! But first, let me tell you who I am.

My name is Bert Carder, I am the CEO and co-founder of Your Beauty Network or YBN as we like to call it. I had an award winning salon in San Diego and operated a business training & consulting business in the salon industry for over 12 years, before starting YBN.

YBN is a suite of easy-to-use online business tools and support designed to help small, independent salons & spas, as well as booth renters, be more successful and profitable.

Now, let me get back to explaining how to how to recruit and hire stylists.

First, Job Descriptions!

Make sure you have a written description of what you expect them to do. Not having it written down is a sure way to have your recruiting efforts backfire. If you need help writing one, YBN has some samples available

Next, Future Advancement!

Let them know what the future looks like if they join your company. They are more likely to want to join your team if they can move up and the company has plans to go someplace big.

Next, Team Interviewing!

Make sure that at least 2 and preferably 3 different people interview someone before you hire them. The owner or manager would interview first and see if they are right and most importantly can do the job. Next few peers would interview them to see if they will fit in with everyone else.

Another benefit of peer interviews is that the peers will help them get connected quicker and have a better chance of making it.

Next, Recruiting Ads!

Make sure you recruiting ads are not dry and boring and just describe the job and the business. They should include things like, awards the company has received, your company values and maybe something about your charity work.

Remember, people want to be a part of something fun and interesting, they don't want to just do a job.

Lastly, Putting the message out!

After, you have a compelling and interesting recruiting ad or flyer get it out there. Post it in your salon by the shampoo bowls, put it on your website, send it to local schools. Give your current employees or clients an incentive, like a $100 cash bonus, if you hire someone they refer who stays at least 90 days.

That's it, those are 5 things you can do to help you recruit and hire stylists.
