When searching for a home to buy, who can resist the allure of rooms that are filled with large windows? Isn't the charm of large bay windows in the master bedroom so much more appealing than a bedroom with so few windows that it feels like a cave? What potential home buyer could honestly claim that they prefer a home with fewer windows and less natural light shining in?
Windows are a wonderful luxury that virtually every homeowner wants to be able to enjoy. However, having lots of windows can sometimes cause problems. Lots of windows means higher heating and air conditioning bills. You may have to invest in drapes or blinds, which can be expensive. And UV rays coming in through windows can even fade the upholstery on our furniture!
However, a home with lots of windows can now be energy efficient as well, thanks to double glazed windows. These specially designed windows work to keep the air inside your home inside your home.
Double glazed windows insulate your home against the air outside the home. The windows are built with two separate panes of glass. A layer of sealed gas such as argon fills the layer in-between the glass, and acts as an insulator. Additionally, the layer of glass facing the interior of your house is coated with a film that bounces the heat energy back into the room.
Since ordinary windows can't trap the air inside your house, your heater or air conditioner has to constantly work to keep the air in your home at a livable temperature. But double glazed windows are built differently. There are two panes of glass with a special layer of gas (usually argon) in the middle. This layer of gas acts to insulate the home against outside air.
Also, in recent years, improvements have been made in double glazed windows so that the interior layer of glass now is coated with a specialized film that helps reflect heat back into a room. This film has made the windows an additional 25 to 50 percent more efficient. These films are also designed to block harmful UV rays from entering your home and prevent the accumulation of condensation on the windows.
Since there are many components to double glazed windows, you have to be very careful when selecting a double glazing company to come install your windows. Double glazed windows are relatively expensive and are a large, though worthwhile, investment for your home. You should obtain quotes from at least four different companies, and be wary of choosing the cheapest available double glazing company. Look for reviews, and talk to friends and neighbors. Take your time in this purchase, and you will find that the quality double glazed windows you buy will greatly improve both the comfort and value of your home for years to come.
