Garage doors are a common part of most modern homes, but are not often thought about. However, to homeowners considering purchasing a new garage door, there is a lot to consider. Garage door manufacturers now make doors in many different materials and styles. Recycled wood, steel and wood are all commonly used today. Whether a simple steel door is needed or an elaborate custom one, there is a style to fit every need. Safety features are also included in the design and installation of modern garage doors. A little research can help homeowners to determine what type of garage door will fit their needs.
Eco-conscious buyers can choose to purchase garage doors made from 100% recycled wood fiber. Unused wood from mills is recycled and covered with exterior grade resin to create solid, strong panels. Garage doors of this type have many benefits. Not only can buyers feel good about the recycled materials, but also the panels are in many ways better than conventional wood doors. They resist moisture, splitting, warping and cracking better than conventional doors, and they will not bend like steel doors. These doors can come in a wide variety of looks and colors, so homeowners will be able to find a style that fits their home.
Trusted for their durability, steel doors have been in use for a long time and are quite affordable. Further, the doors can be made to look like wooden doors to enhance their appearance. An added benefit is that these time-tested doors require little maintenance.
Wood garage doors still hold great appeal for many people. The look, touch and custom beveling, routing and relief work cannot be replicated in another material. Further, several different types of wood can be used, each with its own aesthetic qualities. A finely finished wood door is strong and has looks that can make a distinctive addition to a home.
Garage doors are available with extra insulating qualities for use in cold climates. These doors consist of insulation sandwiched between interior and exterior steel panels. The insulation is a polyurethane product that is free of CFC's (Chloroflourocarbons), which are detrimental to the environment. Air infiltration is further eliminated by thermal seals, which are made to fit between each panel. This type of garage door can attain R-values between 9.31 and 17.50. The galvanized steel on of the exterior panels is resistant to rust and corrosion.
Two helpful safety features are included in modern garage door installations. The first is an infrared beam that spans between the lower parts of doorway of the garage. If the beam is broken at anytime while the door is closing, the door will reverse direction. The second is a contact reverse feature. The garage door will reverse direction if it comes in contact with anything while it is closing.
Homeowners with any kind of need and budget can find a suitable garage door. Whether simple and functional, or elaborate and made to resemble the look of old-fashioned carriage house doors, the right door can be found. Steel door installations are usually quite affordable and trusted for their durability. Elaborate doors can include ornate patterning, windows and custom metal handles and hinges. Although they can cost more, they provide a great addition to any home.
