This definition means that porcelain and fine china can be considered crockery, though generally crockery is tableware used for casual situations. Another name for crockery is earthenware.
There are several different types of crockery that include creamware, delftware, faience, tin-glazed pottery, Victorian majolica, raku and terra cotta. Crockery is very durable but not as tough as stoneware, however crockery is much less expensive them stoneware and needs to be glazed to make it water tight.
The design of crockery is simple and does not have a lot of decorations. Crockery is made to stand up to use and be durable. It can be washed by hand or put in the dish washing. It also is free of design so that it can be mixed and matched with many other different pieces.
Creamware was originally made in Staffordshire, England and was the most popular for domestic use. Wedgewood was the most famous producer of creamware crockery. Wedgewood made creamware that was used by Queen Charlotte and Catherine the Great. Its name comes from the cream colored or bluish white color.
Delftware is blue and white pottery made in the Netherlands. The blue decoration comes from the use of metal oxides. This type of crockery was first produced in the 1500s though the main period of product was form the mid 1600s to the mid 1700s. Delftware became a fine product by incorporating marl into the clay.
Today it is possible to find crockery in almost any cooking store thought the pieces of crockery form famous historical producers are very expensive. Crockery makers were considered artisans and only a handful of masters were allowed to enter the guilds every few years. Much like glass making you needed to be trained to make crockery.
A crockery cooker is perfect for those foods that do not cook well in boiling water. Certain foods are better used in stews as in order to be tender and cut able they need to be cooked for a long time. Using a crockery cooker or slow cooker is also desired so you to not overcook food. There was a whole movement recently based around slow cooking.
If you are not at home a lot you can put a recipe in the crockery cooker before leaving for work and when you get home you will have a meal all set for dinner. When you are looking to purchase a crockery cooker it is recommended that you find one with a removable liner as it is very easy to clean. To properly cook food it needs to reach 140 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are cooking foods on low you need to make sure the internal temperature of the meat reaches this temperature.
