Radiator design - steel panel
Radiators are designed to emit heat by radiation and convection. Radiators which have fin's welded to the rear of the radiator panel emit most of their heat via convection, with a small amount radiating direct from the steel panel. This leads to greater efficiency and a more even heat distribution throughout the room. Standard steel panel radiators which do not have fin's rely on radiant heat, this leads to less efficient localised heating and potential cold spots within the room.
Types radiator
Designs have evolved over the last 60 years to maximize efficiency and provide the maximum choice for the design engineer, however, the most common types of steel panel type radiators now available include:-
It is important to note the manufacturers recommended fixing positions, in order to provide the best heat output performance, this is determined by bracket positioning. Generally radiator manufacturers will provide a range of height options usually at least 4 starting from 300mm high and rising to a maximum of 700mm the accepted UK norm. Width measurement will start from 400mm and will increase by 100mm - 200mm increments to a maximum of 3000mm.
Outputs vary depending on a variety of differing factors and it is important to ensure that the radiator chosen is sufficient in size to adequately heat the room in question.
Radiator styles & manufacturers
There is a variety of different categories of radiators which have been designed to satisfy specific market requirements. These radiator categories are in general terms modified variants of the traditional steel panel type of radiator.
Steel panel convectors
The seamed top is the UK's market leading radiator and is the most commonly fitted radiator in domestic and commercial installations, top grills are an optional extra. However recent years have seen a shift toward the european style compact radiator which have the grills fitted during manufacture.
Compact radiators
These radiators have all the benefits of the steel panel sector both in terms of market acceptability and product benefits but have the added benefit of factory fitted top grills and end panels making a more aesthetically pleasing product for the consumer.
Rolled top radiator
This market has declined significantly after recent years as the compact radiator has increased in popularity. It should be noted that a round top radiator has three seamed edges as well as its rounded top: and due to its method of manufacture, a join is required on the corner where the round top meets the seamed edge this often creates problems for the aesthetics of the finished product.
Integral radiator & towel rail
A central heating product that meets a long standing need in the bathroom, kitchen, cloakroom and utility areas. This product successfully combines a towel rail and radiator in one integrated unit that allows towels to warm without interfering with the vital flow of convected room heat. Electro zinc plated and powder coated panels ensure high resistance to damp conditions.
Tubular towel rails
Designer type towel rail radiator, often supplied with an electric element option, attracts a price premium with some manufacturers offering a variety of styles and color options.
Flat fronted radiators
Smooth flat fronted radiator with integral grills and end panels. Heavy duty plan radiator for example Hudevard are specified where damage or vandalism is likely to occur. Predominantly used in commercial applications, though many interior designers and architects tend to specify this radiator for cosmetic reasons.
Low surface temperature radiators
Designed to conform to the NHS Estates health guidance note "Safe hot water and surface temperature" 1998 edition which states that heating devices should not exceed 43°C when the system is running at maximum design output. This is now the accepted standard not only within health care buildings, but also for local authorities and most commercial building applications. LST's are also proving popular in the domestic market being specified in children's bedrooms and nursery's, particularly if the occupant is disabled.
Different manufactures of central heating radiators are Stelrad Radiators, Myson Radiators and Quinn Radiators.
