Long distance transmission of DVI signals is made possible by using a DVI Extender. This product transmits crystal clear images at resolutions up to 1920 x 1200. Consisting of a local transmitter and remote receiver, this device works on simple plug and play methodology. While the former is connected to the DVI source, the latter connects with the remote monitor. Cat5/Cat5e/Cat6 cables are used for connecting the various devices, thereby eliminating the need for bulky cables. It also overcomes the distance barrier associated with DVI cables allowing the display device to be placed up to 300 feet away from the source. For a longer range of transmission, a fiber optic cable can be used with some extenders.

The extender connected via Cat5 cables is known as a CAT5 DVI Extender. A unique feature of one transmitter and receiver set includes a magnetic pad that enables them to be quickly attached to a metal surface, simplifying the installation process. Available as point to point or splitter extenders, these devices have the ability to extend digital video almost anywhere. These easy to use units are to monitor as all DVI activity is indicated by the built-in LEDs on the device. Some models are equipped with a standard 3.5 mm audio jack input which allows connecting audio from the computers for long distance extension along with the video.

The other type of extender is the DVI Fiber Optic Extender. As the name implies, it secures connections through fiber optic cables which have in built fiber optic components. These extenders are available in single link or dual link versions. The difference between the two lies in the resolutions supported by them. While a single link DVI supports resolutions up to 1080p / 1920x1200 (WUXGA) the dual link technology supports up to 2560x1600 (WQXGA+). The advantage of using these extenders is that it is compact in size, provides added security and is resistant to RFI and EMI. These extenders are FCC and CE approved.
