Hot wax is one of the worst things to drop on your carpet. First, wax hardens and becomes very difficult to remove. And furthermore, the dye in wax may permanently stain your carpet fiber.
Wax cools within seconds and bonds to carpet fibers. Pulling the wax out by hand is a bad idea because it could ruin the carpet fiber. Normal steam cleaning of the carpet won't remove the wax either. It needs something stronger.
So how can a homeowner remove wax? It's really not too difficult, but it does require knowing a couple tricks. Try these tips first. They may be able to save you a professional cleaning fee.
Here's some easy ways to remove wax:
-
Pour hot water on the wax. Then extract the liquefied wax with a wet vacuum or shop vacuum.
-
Take a paper grocery bag and place it over the hardened wax. Place an iron set on low right over the bag. This will melt the wax unto the bag.
-
Use a solvent such as odorless mineral spirits to break down the wax. Then work the solvent in with a butter knife. Pour a cup of water on the area and extract with a wet vacuum to rinse the solvent out. Be careful as too much solvent can ruin your carpet backing.
The important thing to remember is act fast. The longer the wax stays in the carpet the more possibility the dye will permanently damage the carpet fibers. But use caution with these tips. Hot water, irons, and solvents can destroy carpet if not used properly.
If these tips don't successfully remove the wax, call a professional carpet cleaner right away. They have the skills and experience to remove wax and they may be able to save your carpet from premature ugliness. Never underestimate what a true professional can do.
