You can be instructed on how to play a song on the guitar in just a few short guitar classes, even if it's your first time even holding a guitar. Once you have the basic chords memorized that most songs are comprised of, you can play with them and have your own songs created quickly enough. If you want to learn about chords, you have to know more about the layout of the guitar. Locate the six vertical strings and the horizontal, evenly-spaced lines that are directly beneath the strings. The spaces between the bars are called frets. This is the basic information you need to begin playing.
If you want to play a certain chord, you have to find out where you should hold each string down in order to play it. It's a good idea for beginners to start out knowing the lingo associated with the instrument. You will know which strings to hold down and strum by looking at chord charts and guitar tabs. As an illustration, if you want to make a C major chord, you would put your ring finger on the 5th string and hold it down in the 3rd fret, your middle finger would be placed on the 4th string and held down in the 2nd fret, and your pointer finger would be placed on the 2nd string and held down in the 1st fret. With your fingers in the proper positions, use your other hand to strum all the strings but the bottom one.
If you can master the five major chords, you'll know the basics necessary to play a variety of simple songs on the guitar. CAGED is an acronym you can use to remember these. And if you can add a few minor chords to these five, you'll have the knowledge you need to play all kinds of songs on the guitar.
After figuring out these chords, it's important to move from one to the next quickly. This will take a lot of practice to get the fret placement right. It takes time and concentration to get the hang of chord progressions, but gaining these skills at the outset will simplify your guitar learning process. It can often be quite uncomfortable to figure out how to finger chords correctly, but once your fingertips get callused enough you'll be able to handle it. To produce smooth tones, remember to press each string with the same amount of pressure.
If you're keen on accelerating your guitar playing and learning songs quickly, there's a program called Jamorama that you can buy on the web at a reasonable price. I would highly recommend checking it out.
