Below is a list of high cholesterol foods. A lot of these foods are rather popular because many think they taste good. Remember that dietary cholesterol, such as from the foods listed below, can raise your own cholesterol levels. However, saturated and trans fats have a more dramatic effect on cholesterol levels than dietary cholesterol itself.
This partial list shows foods that are high in cholesterol. Typically, foods high in cholesterol are also high in saturated fat. These foods should be consumed in limited quantities. We do not need to eat cholesterol, as our bodies produce all the cholesterol we need.
Surprisingly fish actually contains cholesterol. But more so it contains omega 3 fats, which aid in preventing an increase in blood cholesterol levels. That's why fish is considered a very nutritious meat and a major part of a heart healthy diet.
The Australian Heart Foundation and Health Canada do not have any recommendations for limiting dietary cholesterol, preferring to encourage people to limit saturated fats instead since they have a major impact on cholesterol levels.
The thought is that as our body consumes cholesterol in food, the liver will cut back on the amount that it manufactures. However, keep in mind that some people are genetically inclined to produce more cholesterol regardless of what foods they eat.
People who are at risk for heart disease should restrict their intake of cholesterol to less than 200 mg per day according to the American Heart Association.

Lowering cholesterol through diet alone can be hard to do, especially considering the amount of misinformation out there. Two of the most important things for a person with high cholesterol to cut back on are saturated and trans fats. It also pays to be aware of which foods contain cholesterol, and take care to use them sparingly. You'll more than likely find that foods high in cholesterol are also high in saturated fat.
