In the past, when the lighting was discussed during a new house design or major upgrade to a home, much of the attention was placed on the interior of the structure and little thought was given to the exterior lighting of the building. That is changing with new homes built today, as lighting is finding its way to the landscape and is not simply thought of as a security feature. Most exterior lighting previously consisted of a light next to the front and rear entrances of a house and maybe the carport if this was a feature of the home. I suspect that this lighting was only supplied by builders likely because of some code requirement. Nowadays however, people are looking for outdoor garden lights that not only provide for safety and security, but also enhance the landscape and architectural features of their home.
Of course we want an element of safety and security build into our outdoor lighting plan and these serve as two of the major reasons we light the exterior of our homes. We surely want our family and our guests to be able to walk about our property after sunset and easily be able to navigate the different steps, paths and walkways without fear of tripping or falling because some obstacle went unseen due to darkness. We also want to provide lighting around our home that deters unwanted intruders from sacrificing our protection and security. However, we want this lighting to be utilized in such a way that it also serves to enhance the beauty of our property.
The outdoor garden lights that are available today, easily provide for all three of our objectives when we consider lighting the exterior of our property. Outdoor lighting is available to function as spotlights, floodlights, up lighting, down lighting and is even manufactured to be used underwater. There are any number of styles, sizes, colors and finishes on the market such as brass, steel and copper just to name a few. There are even battery operated, as well as, solar powered lighting available if access to electricity is an issue or you just want to do you part to help preserve the environment.
You will be well served when thinking about the exterior lighting of your home, to venture out one night and just see how others are using outdoor garden lights to highlight the landscape and architecture of their homes. You can hire a professional landscape company to design and install a turnkey lighting system for the property, or if the budget prohibits this, purchase the lighting from a home improvement center and install it yourself. Whichever way you choose, some experimentation and rearranging will likely be in order for you to achieve that perfect look that makes your home the envy of the rest of the neighborhood.
