We, humans, are fond of living in clean and beautiful surroundings. All of us have desire to beautify our homes. We keep making efforts to improve our house within our limitation of budget and time. Interior painting is a major part of house improvement projects. Interior painting not only gives enhanced look to the house but it also covers up any flaws which may be there on the walls. Interior painting spruces up a tired and jaded room. Having a fresh coat of paint is just a very low cost idea to give new looks.
For a proper interior painting project, you need to gather up the materials and supplies and prepare the walls ahead of time. Let us discuss few steps involved in preparing a wall.
First of all make space for painting in your room. For this, remove the furniture from the room as much as possible. Heavy furniture should be moved to the centre of the room. Cover this remaining furniture with drop cloth to protect this from getting dirty. Around the doors, windows and mouldings, removable masking tape should be used. Floors can be protected by using a drop cloth.
Before painting, sanding is required. Before sanding and painting is started, cover the things like smoke detectors, heating and air-conditioning systems. Using sand paper or paint scrapper, scrape or sand any flakes or loose paint off the walls. Any nail or screw holes should be treated with filler using a putty knife. Use caulking to fill any kinds of cracks. For a damaged woodwork, you should apply epoxy filler. To remove any dirt and grease, wash all the surfaces. It is also necessary to rinse the surfaces with water – they should be left for some time to dry.
Before painting, turn off the power supply of the room. Then remove all the cover plates from electrical fixtures and switches. All those switches and fixtures should be covered with a masking tape to protect them from paint. Remove any of the air conditioning or heating vents before painting.
If you use right kind of tools and supplies, anything can be easily painted.
While painting light coloured paint over a dark coloured surface, you should apply a high quality primer sealer. A high quality primer sealer hides even the darkest of shades like deep reds.
While painting glossy surfaces, priming is very essential. Ordinary paints, usually do not stick to the glossy surfaces like clear finishes, metal, panelling or tiles. By applying the primer, the paint not only sticks to the surface but also does not crack or blister.
Painting porous surfaces like new drywall needs good quality priming. Priming a porous surface helps paint to spread more consistently.
