Do you ever wonder what those mystery lines are that form around your walls and underneath doors. They are dark black lines that you just cant seem to clean up. What are they? Keep reading and learn what causes them and how to prevent them.
Most people think those lines that form next to walls are there because their vacuum does not get close enough to the wall or there carpet cleaner didn't clean all the way to the edges. They think it is just a build up of dirt. Unfortunately, it is not that simple. Those lines are actually caused by a much tougher problem, filtration soiling. Filtration soiling occurs when your HVAC system in your home is running. The HVAC forces air into the room and builds pressure. To relieve this pressure, the air travels under the gap at the bottom of the walls and on the way it travels through your carpet fibers. The fibers then act like filters trapping small particles of dust and soot that are difficult to remove.
So how do you treat filtration soiling? This is something best left to a professional, but even professionals will have a hard time removing these lines. What you can do however is try to prevent them. The best way to do that is to leave doors open whenever possible. This will allow air to travel freely between your rooms and it will not tend to rush under the walls anymore. Another thing that you can do is have your funrace checked regularly. Make sure that it has a clean filter and if it is gas, have the mixture adjusted so it burns as clean as possible. If you are getting new carpet installed and you have had filtration soiling in the past, you should also consider sealing the gap underneath your walls. A bead of caulk underneath the wall while the carpet is out should do the trick.
As with nearly everything, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Put your ounce of prevention to work and you will not have to deal with filtration soiling in your home.
