SEO is a term well-known by good webmasters, those who are really willing to do their job properly. For the rest, it is just something they have heard about but they are not sure exactly what it is. The truth is that when you have a new built site, you need to optimize it so that you can be easily found by your public.

So, now the mystery will be revealed. SEO means Search Engine Optimisation or how Search Engines (SE) see your site. This is really important if you want your site to be visited by many people and if you actually want your website to work for you.

There are several things to begin with. Firstly, just so you know, SEO is not something that you do only once, it’s an ongoing process that will keep your site on the first pages of the search engine results.

Secondly, make sure that the code of your site is clean, in other words that there are no errors which will slow down the site as such. There is a popular web service for doing that which is called html validator. It will show you exactly where the errors are on your site and what kind of errors they are. If of course, there are any.

Thirdly, make sure that your site loads as fast as possible. Your hosting service should be reliable and have good bandwidth (speed of connection) because this will determine how long it will take for the site to load. The other factor that affects speed is the content, especially the file size of the images on your pages, because the bigger they are, the longer they will take to load when someone opens the site. This is not a problem only from the visitors’ point of view but also because search engines don’t spend much time trying to crawl a site. If they are not able to gather all the data within a certain amount of time, they just don’t do it. And this will send your site to the bottom of the search engine results. And if you’re gonna have a successful site, I doubt that you will want it there.

In the next post I will give you more data on how to optimise your site so that you can do it for yourself, or if someone else is going to do it for you, so you can supervise their work.
