One way to become an EMT is to go through EMT online training. EMT online training allows you to take courses in the privacy of your own home and to be able to do the lessons and work on your own time. This is convenient if you are working another job while trying to go to school, but it takes a special kind of student to be successful at it, and you need to be sure that going with an EMT training program at an EMT college online is better for you than signing up for the more traditional courses.
First of all, in order to be successful with an online course, not matter what the program, is that you have to be self disciplined. You are forced to set your own hours and study times since no one else is going to do that for you. Normally with an online course, there is not a set date for completion of assignments. It is up to you to get all assignments completed before the end date for the course. Many students find that they do not set a schedule properly for themselves and have to pay a fee to keep themselves in the course even after the term has expired.
In addition, you have to be able to retain information by reading and studying it, rather than having it explained to you by an instructor. If you are an auditory learner, than an EMT online course may not be the best option for you. There are sometimes lessons and lectures that are video taped by the instructors, but it does not give you the opportunity to ask the instructor questions as they go along. The response time for questions to the instructor can take a couple of days via email, so you may not get the information in a timely manner to allow you to do your work. Therefore, if you know you are a person who needs to have interaction with the instructor in order to fully learn the material; taking an EMT online training course may not be the best option for you.
Another aspect about the EMT online training is that not all of the program can be taken online. Even though each state's requirements are different, most will require that you take a written part of an exam as well as a practical portion where you have to demonstrate your skills. Any EMT online program that claims that you can do all of the training without taking any ground classes is probably not a reputable one. The ground classes are essential to allowing you to practice the skills you have been learning about and to get to use the equipment that will be on the ambulances once you get into the field.
As you can see, the online courses can be beneficial in giving you flexibility in scheduling the classes and completing the work. However, you also have to be much more disciplined than a person who is required to turn in work at a particular time through a ground based class.
