A DVI connection is one that is compatible with both analog and digital video. This connection will provide a crisp, clear video display on your television. Most television receivers, DVD players, set top boxes, etcetera have ports for this type of connection included in their design. This makes this type of connection versatile when used with several types of receivers, DVD players, etc.

A component connection is one that is primarily used with high definition receivers and television sets. These component cables are also compatible with many newer DVD players and Set top boxes. These cables are being phased out of analog receivers and television sets altogether. They provide excellent video quality when used with high quality equipment and cables.

An S-video connector creates a video display in a different way from others. The other cables focus only in the area of video. You would not want to use an S video cable if you have high definition capability, but the other connectors will work well with high definition.
