Once a staple in rural America, sheds for a while almost disappeared from the scene -- but now they are making a strong comeback. Why is this? Why the renewed interest -- and use -- of outdoor sheds?
One reason is that building a storage shed is no longer a job that requires the services of a professional carpenter. You can find inexpensive - sometimes even free - plans on how to build a storage shed all over the Internet. As well, there are plenty of do it yourself sheds in kit form available today. Storage shed kits are relatively inexpensive and contain easy-to-follow directions, diagrams and pictures. These storage shed kits provide you with all the necessary materials - all you do is supply the elbow-grease and the proper tools. Building a shed - even building a shed door, is truly easier than ever!
Another reason for the resurgence in popularity of storage sheds is due to the fact that you can get sheds manufactured using many types of materials - as well as many different sizes and styles. In the old days, about your only option was a large wooden or metal shed. Not so in today's world.
Today, you can buy plastic storage sheds - in a great variety of sizes to suit your needs. If money is tight, you can purchase cheap garden sheds, which are nonetheless of very high quality. Plastic sheds are lightweight, easy to set up and move around, and are maintenance-free.
Metal storage sheds and wooden storage sheds are still available of course - but using a wide variety of woods and metals, including pine, spruce, plywood, as well as galvanized steel, iron and aluminum. You can also purchase storage sheds constructed out of vinyl. The vinyl storage sheds require little to no maintenance (just like the plastic ones), whereas metal and wood sheds will usually require some maintenance.
Sheds today are put to many uses: Storage of flammable and harmful materials, gardening supplies and lawn equipment, porch and deck furniture storage. Some folks are even using sheds as a small, separate office or hobby work area. A few lucky children have been given them as the perfect tree house, dollhouse or playhouse.
Whether you use your shed for storage, for hobbies, as a work area, for the kids - or just as a quiet refuge - you will find them the ideal outdoor compliment to any home.
