Major record labels are terrible at promotion and are losing money in this Internet driven music business. They are losing money - you are in a great position now. You don't have a dictated releases schedule, you handle it all. You can now be your own record label, distribution company, and promoter.
Simply follow all 5 items below to catapult your career. What seems easy or not important is actually very relevant - so do these no matter how you feel.
Take your Music Seriously
First, take your music seriously. If you do this you could get on tour , and then even change careers. Let your parents, spouse, friends, kids know you are on a serious mission.
This is a Business. If you handle your career like a business everyone around you will realize that they need to give you the time and space you need to make things move forward.
Stay Focused
Third, stay focused. When you promote your music on line set aside time to follow a system daily. If you want to get ahead you must have rock solid focus - that will help you move forward every day.
Use the Tools Around You
Use social networking sites
Fourth, use the tools around you. If you have not already discovered, there is MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more on line services that will help you for free, to promote your music. Copy how other musicians are using these sites to help your efforts. Take ideas from your favorite bands, dj's, musicians and use them as yours. Send out meaningful content to your friends. Give away things such as mp3s, cd's , and T-Shirts.
Keep your day gig!
Your day job is Crucial to keep - For Now! You need money to promote. A place to stay, gigs, food all cost money. Make sure you income level is exactly the same before you leave your day job. A lot of new musicians are deciding to simply KEEP their day jobs.
Use all five of these techniques together and you will ultimately become amazingly successful in all that you do in the music business.
