Not long ago was poking around on the internet, and there was this one question kept catching my eye, the question was "How often should you weigh yourself while trying to lose weight?". So just in case this is a question that might be lingering around in the back of you mind, I thought I would share a few tips.

I personally believe that weighing yourself on a daily basis can have some tremendous benefits, but sometime those benefits can come at a cost.

One thing that I personally love about weighing myself daily is that it helps me keep weight loss top of mind, and causes me to stay focused not only on my weight loss goals, but what I am eating, and how much I exercise.

Standing on the scales can be sometimes a big eye opener, especially if you know you had a little to much to eat at dinner, and the following day when you stand on the scale you see your weight has increased.

Weighing yourself daily can really help your motivation to lose weight, especially when you see the numbers reducing. However on the flip side, weighing yourself daily can also be disheartening, especially if you have eaten really well and exercised, and then for no apparent reason you put weight on the following day.

While different experts all recommend different things, the overwhelming majority of the experts from what I've found recommend weighing yourself weekly.

If you feel that weighing yourself weekly is the way to go, a few tips that can help keep your motivation to lose weight high is:

  1. Having a set time each week to weigh yourself. For example, weighing yourself every Wednesday morning before breakfast.

  2. Understand that your weight can, and does fluctuate. From time to time you may see an increase in weight even if you are weighing in weekly. The trick is to not let this get you down. Keep doing what you are doing, and if you start to see a pattern forming and your weight is increasing week after week, it might be time to sit down and work out exactly what is going wrong.

So at the end of the day, whether you choose to weigh yourself daily or weekly I believe comes down more to personal preference. I personally like to weigh myself daily because it helps keep me focused on my goals, what I am eating, and how much I am exercising.

If you do choose to weigh yourself daily, understand that your weight will fluctuate from day to day for no apparent reason. When this happen you cannot let it get to you. If it does get to you, you're probably better off with the weekly approach.
