Our body’s brain stem, located behind the eyes and nose, has an "anti-pain" system. When this area sees an incoming signal that is painful, it fights back with a powerful neuro-transmitter (chemical that passes impulses from one nerve to another) called serotonin, causing a relieving effect. Serotonin acts as a filter to screen these unimportant signals. The more serotonin we have, the lesser chances to headaches. The opposite means more chances to headaches - this is what causes headaches.
Most headaches however are caused by other illnesses like disorders in the eyes and nasal cavity. Headaches are also signals that there is something wrong in the other parts of the head or brain. It goes with vomiting, nausea, malaise, blurred vision, visual impairment, confusion and irritability. Headaches can be signs of more fatal illness as
cerebral aneurysms or brain cancer.
Migraine headaches, most common in women, are usually recurring. They can be a result of a lot of different problems as depression, pregnancy, high blood, etc. Fatigue, lack of sleep, missing meals, allergies, sensitivity to light or noise and drug intake are also contributors. It usually lasts 4-72 hours.
When this occurs, it can be of help to rest in a dark, quiet room if possible. Hot and cold compresses to the neck and head can be alleviating, as well as massage.
There is food that can trigger headaches too. Such as chocolates, MSG, cheese, flavor enhancers and caffeine.
