Traffic, Traffic, Traffic – everyone is screaming for Web Traffic, and with good reason, because Website Traffic is obviously the lifeblood of your business. No traffic, no potential customers. And by now it should be no news that paid advertising is not the best way to get noticed. It is only one way to do it. But not only is search engine advertising becoming more and more expensive every day, it is simply just one alternative. If you’ve understood anything about marketing online, by now you should be aware that the key is to have diversified traffic. This means various streams of traffic from many different sources.

This is what is called Search Engine Marketing (SEM). While SEO (Search Engine Optimization) refers to having your website optimized in terms of appearance, quality, and a reasonable, and smart use of keywords, this is only one part of successful marketing online. This is the part of getting your site ready. But then the real magic has to begin. And the real magic is, when you start getting back-links from many other good quality website. This is what is called back-linking. Honestly it took me a while till I understood that. When I started with Internet marketing I have heard it all the time – back-link, back link, back link, but had no clue what the heck it was, let alone how to apply it, and not to mention the question how to generate all these amounts of back links, and ideally for free. That was a mystery for me for quite a while.

A back link simply means that your website URL appears on somebody else’s site. Some years ago the common practice that worked out very well was that webmasters contacted each other to help themselves getting some incoming links by putting each other’s URLs on their sites. This is called reverse back linking. Today this is no more as important as it was. Because it has become such a common practice that search engines started to rate reverse-back links lower, assuming that its just a trade between webmasters, which it actually is.

While what the search engine want to see is relevancy and importance of a website. The back linking value itself is founded in the fact how search engines "think". They say if a website has tons of incoming links from numerous others sites, blogs, etc. it appears that this site is being discussed a lot, people seem to be interested in that content, and like to spread it. Which is obviously true. So this is the idea behind back linking in terms of Internet marketing traffic generation. Not only the search engines start to notice that your URL appears in a lot of places, making your website look like a valuable content source (also referred to as "authority site") but the further website traffic generator is the fact, that indeed your link being shown on many sites will increase chances that people click on it, and get to your site.

In other words many incoming links (back links) mean increasing traffic, and increasing ranking for those obvious reasons. But don’t forget that your site also has to really be providing some good content, be structured, contain important legal elements like disclaimer, privacy statements etc. Since this is one of the factors search engines are checking to decide if this is just a quick simple spam site, or whether somebody has serious intentions, and has put work into it to make it be good. This is what we refer to as Search Engine Optimization (SEM). But now back to our back link topic.

The more back links you can get, the better. So not only nowadays reverse back links in exchange with other people are not counted a high value back link any more, it would also be pretty time consuming to do it that way. The internet has exploded, and so has the number of websites. And all of them fighting for top rankings. This is the reason why everything must be blown up a lot more today. That’s just the way it is. Fortunately, not only competition has grown. But also technology has grown. The internet marketing methods became smarter. And thus, slow but steady some real cool process automation tools have grown out of the ground as well.
