The use of contact lenses is spreading very fast all over the world; millions of people have discarded the shabby glass spectacles and have started using contact lens for the protection of the eyes. The glass spectacles and lenses are the two main tools used for the protection of human eyes; and both of them are equally important for one’s eyes. But since the lens is a new invention, it precedes the spectacle in several aspects. Sometimes these disadvantages of the eye glasses can be neglected, but not all the time. There are certain situations where the eye glasses are not at all suitable for the eyes. To prevent such circumstances the contact lenses can be very helpful. Because of these advantages of the lenses, millions of people have started using them. The contact lenses are used mainly by the teenagers as they are quite fashionable and provide a better look than that of the eye glasses. One of the most important qualities of a contact lens is that it can be used by anyone. Even the infants can use a contact lens if it is inserted and removed from the eyes by the parents.
However, there is one major disadvantage of the contact lenses and it is the cleaning and disinfecting of the lens. Many people stay away from the contact just because of this. Contact lenses must be cleaned and disinfected regularly, using the contact lens solution. Due to day long usage, layers of dirt and protein get deposited on the lens, which if not cleaned produces enough irritation and can also cause serious eye infection. The solution provided with the contact lens is very important for the longevity of the lens and to get the optimum performance from the lens and also for the well being of the eyes. If the lens is not cleaned and disinfected regularly, then certain microorganisms can grow up on the lens leading to eye diseases. Contact lenses should always be put off before sleeping and kept soaked in the solution for the entire night and while cleaning, people must maintain certain precautions.
Firstly, the person, who is going to clean the lens should wash his or her hands properly before holding the lens, then soak it with any clean piece of cloth. After which the solution soaked lens should be rubbed gently and cleaned with a clean cloth. The contacts are so delicate that a single scratch can damage the whole lens. Secondly, people should avoid water for cleaning the lenses. Normal tap water contains several minerals and microorganisms, which can cause eye infections. If these precautions are maintained properly, then the lenses can be the best tool for the protection of the eyes. However, every person must consult an eye specialist before buying a contact lens. One’s eyes are not suitable for any kind of lens available in the market; an unsuitable contact lens can lead to several visionary problems. The doctor knows the best about the eyes and what type of lens to be used for its protection.
