Becoming a property photographer is one of the most lucrative ways to make money with your camera and yet there are relatively few people who go into this career, compared to more traditional routes such as wedding photography and pet photography. This means that you have less competition to contend with as a plus before you even start. There are also some advantages with this type of photography which will become clear below.

Advantages Of Property Photography

With most types of photography you are under pressure to take a shot. In sports photography, you may only have a fraction of a second of an opportunity to take that killer shot. With family portrait photography and wedding photography, the shots may be posed but you cannot waste time and they have to be good. You do not have time to retake photograph after photograph in an effort to improve.

With property photography, you are generally left to your own devices. You can work your environment until you have obtained the most satisfactory shot. Generally, you are not put under any kind of extreme time pressure.

Additionally, there tends to be less competition for property photography. Have you ever heard of a photographer waxing lyrical about this particular niche? Probably not. Many even think that property makes for a boring and uninteresting subject which could not be further from the truth.

Cross-Selling Opportunities

Perhaps the biggest advantage of being a property photographer (and therefore worthy of separate mention) is the opportunity to cross-sell. Taking shots of a house or an apartment is just the beginning.

Most property photographers find that they earn much more (and sometimes the bulk of their income) from referrals for other work. On location, you are in a great position to pitch your other talents such as wedding or family portrait photography.

Money From Prints

As with most other forms of freelance photography, a great amount of money can be made on prints. All you need to do is provide the facility for ordering them.

It is best if you are able to act as a middleman between your clients and the processing lab. This means that you also act as a sort of quality control too. If you don't have the time, you can always outsource the prints entirely. One way to do this is to have an "order prints" option available directly adjacent to the digital photos on your website.
