While I'm not aware of all of Gettysburg's restaurants, I know the most famous sports player Gettysburg ever produced. Do you know who is the third most successful left handed player?

Gattysburg's very own Eddie Plank. Didn't you already know that?

Plank himself came into the world a decade after the Civil War, and went on to have several successful seasons among his 17 years in baseball, capturing six pennants for the Philadelphia A's.

No trip to Gettysburg Eddie's is complete without seeing the twenty four photos of ballplayers from his era on the wall, from Tris Speaker to Walter "Big Train" Johnson, and Johnny Ever's famous handshake with Eddie Plank himself, and even Babe Ruth, another famous left handed baseball player, himself playing for the Red Sox.

You can even find pictures of Eddie Plank's Gettysburg College squads that he played with, in their wool uniforms with their baseball mitts and tall socks.

The best part about the whole experience was the food, of course, after the memorabilia. You won't get served anything fancy here; it's mostly typical American fare, but the quality of the food was top-notch. We had a fantastic, patient server, and I enjoyed the fact that they tried to be eco-friendly.

The restaurant used to be called the Gingerbread Man, and is in fact under the same management, but Bill Wills, the owner, saw fit to rename the place after his favorite pitcher. It also provides a good contrast to the rest of the attractions in this town, which are Civil War-focused.

If you want to enjoy a few drinks, you can check out the bar in the back that has a great flatscreen TV and many drinks. You might want to look out on a Sunday night, as it can get rowdy during the games, but it's fun nonetheless.

Gettysburg Eddie's didn't contain much that upset me at all. There are no pretensions about it being a fine dining establishment, but the friendly atmosphere and good comfort food makes up for it.

Also, as one of the first green-certified restaurants in the state of Pennsylvania, they deserve a bit of extra respect and attention.
