Ammonia is okay in diamonds, sapphires and rubies but it will surely damage other gems. Professional polishing solutions can make gold shinier but this is an abrasive material that can scratch your gold.
It is advisable that you clean your jewel regularly. Especially diamonds because it attracts grease. Oils from your skin can cause gold and silver to tarnish. Just mild soap and water is best for keeping your jewelry clean. It is also important that you have a good jewelry box to store your jewels safely and properly.
