Many denture wearers are discovering neurological problems caused by the use of their choice in denture adhesives. There are several brands however some of the most popular ones are causing the most damage including but not limited to Poligrip and fixodent. There are several thousand consumers involved in a class action denture cream lawsuit involving both popular denture creams.
The grounds for their lawsuits are denture cream poisoning. This involves the overdose of zinc found in high levels in both poligrip and fixodent. Learning potential warning signs and symptoms of zinc overdose as well as copper deficiency caused by increased zinc in the body will help anyone determine whether this is a problem for them as well.
Below are some conditions associated with high levels of zinc [aka Hyperzincemia] in adults & children:
Adults-
Balance problems
Loss of sensation
unexplained pain
decrease in walking [stride changes]
Numbness
Tingling [arms & legs]
The recommended daily dose for men is 11 mg and the recommended dose for women is 8 mg, published by the institute of medicine the highest dose tolerated by an adult is 40 mg. Ingredients in adhesives like poligrip & fixodent are not regulated or evaluated by the FDA [Food & Drug Administration] this can be dangerous if used inappropriately or on a regular basis for an extended period of time. Awareness of the signs & symptoms can help you determine if your body is being effected by the long term use of these drugs.
Children-
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Stomach cramps
joint pain
seizures
fever
excessive fatigue
While it is unlikely a child must worry about denture use, it is still important to notice symptoms of zinc poisoning in your children as well there are several other ways you can develop this condition.
Zinc overdose or Hypercemia can cause decreased levels of copper causing a lot of there conditions and symptoms. Reduced levels of copper or copper deficiency can cause things like:
Skin sores
Hair loss
diarrhea
paleness
slowed growth
fatigue
reduced thyroid & red blood cell function
cardiovascular disease
slowed healing
These things can cause serious problems in the nervous system, and immune system. Many other conditions have these marked symptoms making it difficult sometimes to detect. But being informed and knowing the symptoms can help you and your doctor become more aware. If you suspect you may have these symptoms a simple blood test can check levels within weeks. Asking your doctor to evaluated your vitamin & mineral levels once a year is best.
There are several lawsuits being conducted now regarding denture cream poisoning. Looking into this if you are a denture cream user and have had any of the underlining symptoms may be beneficial to both you and your family. Becoming aware of what is approved and not approved by the FDA and looking into regulation laws of the products you use regularly will help give you added piece of mind and help protect you and your family. When in doubt asking questions should always be the first step for you and your family.
