There are hundreds of weight loss plans out there, but you can’t just jump into the first one you come across. No program is "one size fits all", therefore it is very important to choose the one that suits your body, lifestyle, and needs the most. So how do you know which one is right for you? Here are some tips to consider.

See your doctor. It is recommended to consult your physician first if you plan to lose 15 pounds or more, take regular medication, or have health problems. Your doctor can help you set a realistic weight loss goal and give his/her input on a program that you might be thinking about.

Do your research. Find out as much as you can about the weight loss program you’re considering – go to its website and read reviews by other people on online message boards and forums. One important thing to look at is the calorie intake of the diet plan. If it advocates a low calorie intake level, then cross it off your list. While you may see some weight loss at first, you will be losing mostly water and muscle, not fat. Such a plan may also cause you to feel deprived.

Consider your budget. If you’re planning to join a commercial weight loss program, ask for a detailed statement of fees and costs of additional items such as supplements. Naturally, the less weight you need to lose, the less money you should spend.

And your lifestyle, too. If a weight loss plan requires you to spend a lot of time in the kitchen but you’re always on the go, then it probably isn’t for you. Make sure that the program you select fits your lifestyle, as this is a key factor in your success.

Have fun! The weight loss plans that work are the ones that you enjoy, as you’re more likely to stick to them. If you hate traditional exercise, try joining a cardio class that involves dance movements and great music. If you don’t like the gym, work out by jogging in the park or joining a cycling club. If you like exercising in the comfort of your own home, invest in good workout DVD’s.

Never give up. Try a weight loss program for at least 30 days to allow your body and mind to adjust. If you see results and like the program, then continue what you’re doing. If you don’t see results, feel deprived, or just hate the program, find another one. Sometimes you don’t find "the one" right away, but the important thing to remember is to never quit. Soon enough, you’ll be saying hello to a fit and fabulous new you!
