First of all, let me put something to rest: Search engines. Yeah, they are wonderful, and you can rely on them for just about anything. For 99.99% of stuff, they work perfectly fine for leading you in the general direction of what you were looking for. Notice that I didn't say 100%, because great survey websites are not one of the things you can rely on them for. I noticed a long time ago that they were useless for showing me where the biggest payments are. They never led me to the good ones. Never. In order to start getting paid for surveys, I needed something else to lead me there.

The thing that led me there happens to be forums. Yes, old fashioned forums, especially the largest ones, are all you really need, day I and day out. Try it for yourself and see what I mean. You run into tons less spam compared to engines and you also get led to topics about survey sites, instead of links directly to random places that usually have horrible payments. You actually get to read the posts that people make, where they spill their guts about where they are earning lots and where they are earning very little when getting paid for surveys during their free time.
