The main question of Martin Scorsese film is what is the better way: to live as a monster or die as person. The story takes place in the middle fiftieth years. America hunts for communists and spies with special passion. People suspect secret plots in everything they see. Retired military man Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio), U.S. Marshal, is directed by the authorities on investigation of mysterious disappearance of one patient of the closed psychiatric clinic possessed on island surrounded with water from different directions. A pistol, a badge, partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) and information about the severe customs reigning in clinic, which can be called simply "prison", here is a "luggage" DiCaprio’s hero has.
A barbed wire energized on the clinic perimeter, the spoilt patients’ faces, armed security forces, strange and provocative behavior of Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley), the scared reserve of the staff, mysterious case "C" with closed access – too difficult to stay optimistic watching this film.
Everybody there hides something, speaks the learnt phrases, and advices Daniels to run away. The sky brings down grandiose hurricane there, nightmares visit heroes every night, phantoms from the past walking around and nobody knows maybe very soon the hero can become the hopeless patient without any chance to escape. If there is someone to be sent in madhouse, it should be a person who still calls into question Leonardo DiCaprio's actor's abilities. He is not a "girls’ dream from Titanic" anymore. He is a lucky start of Martin Scorsese. "Shutter Island" is the fourth film made by Scorsese and DiCaprio. They successfully present confused thriller as faultless and delightful tragedy of the main hero.
Time after time it seems to me as if surrounding heroes become lifeless dolls, and DiCaprio just move nearly and try to find true answer and restore a justice. I’m impressed so much. 67-year-old talented person (Scorsese I mean), made surprisingly dynamical performer, with special ability to choose actors exactly and, no doubts, for DiCaprio, who become more and more talented.
Thus, undoubtedly, «Shutter Island» is a genre film. Scorsese’s target is not to surprise critics and being loved by everyone. And it is right position, I think. Not each of the films has to be a favorite of European festivals and critics. For somebody it is important being called just "the Great Hollywood Director". All this film can be called as "Leonardo DiCaprio benefit" – watch Shutter Island online.
