Most children enjoy music whether they are just listening to it, dancing to it or even just singing along to it. It is no surprise then that so many children go on to make their own music and start learning to play a musical instrument themselves.

In the past schools would encourage youngsters to take up instruments such as the triangle, the tambourine or the recorder. I think there will be many of us who will remember an involvement with these simple instruments in our own childhood days.

In this new century though youngsters want far more sophisticated instruments to play than those their parents had been content with. It is that box in the corner of too many rooms, the TV that influences our young people today. It is the television that entertains, educates and delivers the ideas that this generation of kids will follow.

Every pop group and most singers to be seen on the television seem to have a guitar in their hands. So is it any wonder that so often the choice is one of guitar for kids? Why would they want to play a triangle or recorder?

So little surprise then when your youngster asks you to dig deep and buy him or her a guitar. It goes without saying that as a good parent you will want to encourage that interest because you know that learning to play a musical instrument is going to be an enriching factor of your child’s development.

The likelihood is that you will be given little say in the style of guitar you eventually buy. Kids are quite inflexible when they have an idea in their head and if it’s an electric, an acoustic or a classical guitar they want, then it is probable that that is what you will end up buying.

Critically for you and for your youngster is that having got this super new guitar there is a mechanism at hand to learn to play it, some guitar lessons for kids. The most direct route to disappointment for that guitar and its owner will be the route that has no direction.
