New York City is probably one of the best known cities in the world. As a result, it is also one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world. But once you actually get to "the city that never sleeps," it can be hard to figure out what to do first. Do you go visit the Empire State Building or the Museum of Modern Art? Central Park or FAO Schwarz? Although I do not live in the Big City, I live close enough to know what are the must-see New York City destinations. And of course, you can visit MetroFlats.com for great deals on New York City vacation rentals.
- American Museum of Natural History
You simply cannot visit New York without hitting this wonderful museum. Ticket prices are very reasonable for New York and you can actually get in for free on the last two hours on Sundays. While there, be sure to visit the Dinosaur exhibit as well as Arms and Armor. Oh, and don’t miss the famous giant Blue Whale statue! But regardless of what you see there, you are sure to learn a lot and be awed by the impressive exhibits.
- The Bronx Zoo
There are two zoos in New York: The Bronx Zoo and the Central Park Zoo. While the Central Park Zoo is nice, the Bronx Zoo is much larger and impressive. You will see a variety of animals, such as Polar Bears, Penguins, Monkeys, and more. This is without a doubt a must see locale, especially if you have kids. The Baboon Reserve is my personal recommendation (but I may be a bit biased here, I love Baboons). Each exhibit has detailed background on the individual animals, giving you a great education on wildlife.
- New Yankee Stadium
Regardless of whether you are a Yankee fan--or whether you are a baseball fan, for that matter--you have to visit the New Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Granted, tickets are a bit on the expensive side, but the stadium is so gorgeous, that it’s worth it. Make sure to get there well before game-time so you can have the chance to see the Yankees museum, which has memorabilia from throughout the Yankees illustrious history. I also recommend eating at NYY Steak after the game.
- FAO Schwarz
The oldest (and one of the largest) toy retailer in North America, this is definitely an attraction you want to visit, even if you don’t have children. The scope of this toy store is so massive that it will take your breath away. Even if you are a hardened adult, you will feel like a child again. If you have ever seen the movie Big, you will recognize the giant floor piano. If you jump on the various keys, the corresponding noise will come out. All in all, this is a magical experience.
- Times Square
Although it can be incredibly overwhelming, my final recommendation is Times Square. This is without question the epicenter of New York City. It’s what you see in many photos of the city, and it contains many attractions. You may even have the chance to see the famous Naked Cowboy and other street performers. As I mentioned, the crowds here are absolutely huge, and I admit to being a little intimidated at first. But one you get over that, you will find a remarkable area filled with all the tourist attractions your heart could desire.
So there you have it. Of course, all of the locations in this list are personal opinions. If you ask a thousand different people what the must see Manhattan tourist attractions are, you will get a thousand different answers. But that’s the beauty of New York: there are so many fantastic attractions, there is no way anybody would have the same exact list. So what are you waiting for?
