While the last 40 years have been good for workplace equality for women, there are still plenty of obstacles keeping women from being able to hold down satisfying careers while caring for a family. When you’re a working woman, you can sometimes find yourself isolated from other women in your own situation—the demands of family time can keep you from networking with co-workers.
And if you’re trying to improve your prospects by gaining an education, the pressures of working and family life can crowd out any time you had for taking classes. Gaining access to higher education can be tricky for any working adult. For women, who typically take on the lion’s share of family and household responsibilities in addition to their jobs, education is often even more out of reach.
Fortunately, the Internet now offers new opportunities for study—through online degree programs—and socializing, through networking sites such as WomenAchieve.org. A collaboration between Women Employed and American InterContinental University, WomenAchieve.org aims to provide resources and networking opportunities for working women who are trying to expand their marketable skills through education.
Who’s Behind WomenAchieve.org?
WomenAchieve.org is the brainchild of two organizations: American InterContinental University (AIU) and Women Employed. Women Employed, a leading national advocate for women in the workplace, has been working since 1971 to ensure that women have equal opportunity to earn family-supporting wages with access to child care and other supportive benefits. AIU, established in 1970, is a university with a network of campuses online and on the ground that provides career-focused education. AIU strives to make its courses accessible to working adults.
