The world of beekeeping is fascinating, as it not only is an interesting hobby, but one that can also turn into a lucrative business. Keeping bees, however has its own rules, and you should first find a lot of information about it before you engage in this activity.
Getting Started
If you are a beginner on beekeeping, you can start by buying package bees or buying an already established bee colony. You can also try collecting swarms of bees, but this takes a lot of experience, which may not be a good activity for someone who is just starting a beekeeping hobby.
Beekeeping Equipment
Beekeeping entails certain procedures that will require you to have the proper beekeeping equipment. One of the most important piece of equipment that you need will be your own protective gear, to make sure that you will not be at risk from bee stings. Bear in mind that keeping bees has its own dangers, primarily being stung by a bee, which can be deadly, if you or a member of your family is allergic to bee stings. You need a full beekeeping suit, a hat, a veil and gloves to protect your body from these bee stings.
Keeping bees also requires that you buy other equipment such as a honey extractor, a smoker and a feeder. The honey extractor will help you harvest the honey produced from the combs, while the smoker can help distract the bees, so that they will not consider you as an intruder, and you can easily work around them. The feeder may come in handy during winter when bees do not frequently come out of the hives.
Harvesting Honey
The best, yet the most challenging part of keeping bees is harvesting the honey. Beekeeping involves understanding the way bees work and knowing when is the perfect time for harvesting honey. If the honey is removed from the hive too soon, it will have too much water which can ferment or spoil the honey. However, if the honey is left too long, the honey will be darker and there will not be enough room in the hive for the bees to store more honey. Most people would prefer light colored honey, although the taste is not really affected by the honey color.
You should harvest the honey while the bees are busy, preferably early in the morning. The best indicator that the honey is ready for harvesting is when wax covers the honey cells.
Benefits of Beekeeping
To enjoy the most benefits from your beekeeping hobby, make sure that you comply with all of your state's regulations on keeping bees. You should also make sure that the location you chose for your beehives is the best one for bees, and one that will not put people, especially children at risk of bee stings.
Learn more about bees and you will soon reap the benefits of beekeeping, from the honey that you can enjoy all year round, as well as some money coming in from the sale of your honey.
