Have you ever wanted to color code your tweets to quickly spot that important tweet and quickly skip over the rest. Well if you have an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad you can! It's probably one of the best kept secrets! You can have a different color background and text for each person's tweets that you follow. Also you can set a different color background and text for each person's read and unread tweets making tweets super easy to spot in the twitter timeline.
First you'll need to get a twitter client that allows tweet color coding. "Tweet" and "Tweet - iPad Edition" are twitter clients for the iPhone, iPod and iPad that support color coding and have a combination of unique features. Download one of these from the app store and you'll be good to go.
Next you'll need to launch Tweet and enter your username and password. Your tweets will appear in the Friends, Mentions and Direct Message timelines. Touching on the tweet will give you a second menu screen. Touch on the top item with the users' picture to get yet another menu screen and scroll to the bottom and they'll be an option to set colors for this user. Tapping this item will reveal a color menu with red, green and blue sliders. Before you're able to create a color the bottom of the screen will present four options:
- Background color
- Text color
- Unread background color
- Unread text color
First off I'll need to explain the difference between "Background color" and "Unread background color". When tweets first appear in the timelines, they are considered "unread". The next time you bring up the app tweets you read last time are brought up again and are now considered to be "read".
The background color will set all read tweets (tweets that have been retrieved and stored previously) from this particular user to the color you create with slider controls. The text color sets the color of the read tweets text (color of the letters) from this particular user.
The unread background color will set the background color for freshly loaded tweets and the unread text color will set the text color (color of the letters) from this particular user.
After selecting which one of the four options you wish to create a color for you use the red, green and blue slider controls to create your color. When you are satisfied with the color you tap the save button on the top right. Tap the back buttons on the top left of each menu to take you back to the timeline where you'll see the color has changed!
What's really neat is that once a user's tweets are color coded their tweets stand out everywhere. If you happen to get one of their tweets while you are searching or viewing trending topics it will stand out right away as someone you know.
If you don't want to read their tweets you can set the background and text color to be the same. Then you can't read their tweets but you still know that some came in while you are scrolling! All in all a really great way to filter out noise and stay organized.
Similarly if you tap on More at the bottom right of the screen they'll be an option to set default colors for everyone that you follow. Don't forget to tap the save button!
So that's how to color code your tweets on your iPhone or iPad. I hope that this saves you considerable time when browsing your timelines and happy tweeting!
