According to soyouwanna.com, all you need to get signed to a record label is to "have good music, look ‘"signable" and have a professional-looking demo package." I don’t believe this is enough these days to get signed to a record label.
As you know, the music industry is struggling to find a new model to make money because the old model was based on album sales and album sales are sinking like a tank. As a result, any band that is following this old, antiquated method of trying to get signed is running around like a chicken with their head cut off. "Having good music, looking "signable" and having a professional-looking demo package" is good to have and are necessities to having a career in this new music industry, but I’m going to be real with you...it’s not going to help you get signed.
In this new music industry if you want to get a record deal your band or you as a singer/songwriter must be making money. Record labels want to find bands and artists that are already carving out their niche in the world of music. They want to be able to find an artist that is smart, playing shows once a week with an average attendance of 120 people and that are selling albums. They want to work with bands that are making a minimum of $5,000 per month. Why?
Simple...the record labels don’t have the time or money to put up to develop an artist. The risk is to high. Keep in mind the record labels are about the business. Artists supply the music and the labels will definitely supply the business. They want to be able to scoop up a band or singer/songwriter that is already doing well and then just add their money and marketing formula behind that artist to expedite their career. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn’t.
So here’s my advice for you if you are looking for a record deal. First you need to make a conscious decision that you are going to take control of your music career. I’m sick and tired of the music industry telling artists to go play shows, hire a manager and a booking agent to build their music career and if you do these things properly, one day you can have a record deal. This is garbage in this new music industry.
Rather, we artists need to wake up and change our paradigm. We must stop looking at the music industry through this old, shattered lens. It’s clouding our perception. Now due to the advances in technology and the Internet, we have all the tools, all the marketing and all the industry professionals right at our finger tips! I encourage you to make a conscious decision to take control of your career today!
No more of this "Let’s play shows for the sake of playing shows and hopefully someone will discover us" mentality. No more of, "Let me send in my demos to the record labels and managers and hopefully they’ll work with me" mentality. Enough is enough and I want to help you take control of your career.
The reason artists fail to create a career in this new industry is because they don’t have a plan. They don’t have a plan of action to guide them on their journey to success. I promise you, you can have the greatest music in the world and be playing shows, but if you don’t have a plan of action to guide you...you’re not going to make it in this new music industry.
