Apparently readymade worm and bloodworm carp fishing baits are in fashion at the moment. I do not use these baits myself (with good reason) but I can reveal to you some tips to ensure that your baits will be more potently effective than readymade baits! If you believe that bloodworm, maggot extract and hydrolysed worm extract baits are the next big edge and want to top readymade baits read on right now and catch fish big-time!
If you think that simply buying readymade baits is going to launch your catches into hyperspace well you might be in for disappointment. But you can certainly maximise and optimise your own boosted versions of readymade baits and better still make your own homemade version to beat the rest!
But surely the commercial readymade baits are the very latest best baits you could possibly use? Surely they are already optimised for performance and maximum effectiveness to achieve maximum numbers of bites?
Unfortunately, commercial baits are a massive compromise between a product that must make profit, and a bait that will be perceived as a proper carp bait to the masses. The fact is that the most successful baits are certainly not conventional baits bay any means, and baits that are truly optimised for maximum performance will of course be in solution in the water within a few hours and will not just sit there intake for hours after hour!
In my experience, baits that do not become soluble within a few hours cannot possibly compete against ones that do taking into account that in tests such baits contain the same comparable feeding triggers, attractors, particularly bioactive and habit-forming extracts and components, enhancers, sweeteners, palatants, supplements, digestible and soluble proteins etc. Most anglers have no idea how comparatively effectively optimised and effective their baits are except from their own catch results compared to others.
But this is far from evidence that baits are actually working as well as they possibly can be made to! I believe that there are always possibilities for bettering the impacts and optimal instant and longer-term functional and biological effects and habit-forming duration of any bait. They do not have to be extremely complex either, but key aspects of baits need to be focussed on!
Certain bait recipes are optimised to a degree at least for their capacity potentially to be digested. The faster a bait passes through fish to the benefit of the fish, the more chance you may well achieve repetitive feeding in favour of your baits in the short and long term – in theory. But fish can be contrary creatures! In theory readymade baits that have been sorted for limiting amino acids should be out-fishing other baits by so many scores of fish. But do you get that impression from catches on all kinds of baits represented in the angling press, or even on your waters where a range of different baits are used?
You can achieve pre-digested highly digestible baits that compete with readymade baits in loads of simple ways, maybe maximising bait solubility and throughput through the gut, incorporating various metabolism-boosting components, improving the probiotic and probiotic internal impacts of your baits, while exploiting aspects of bait components that in effect make them excellent instant baits at the same time as ones which have cumulative habit-forming internal impacts on fish behaviours.
There is no doubt whatsoever that incorporating even one substance with enough power over fish responses to make them lose their feeding caution is enough to skew comparative results comparisons between balanced nutritional baits with sorted limited amino acids, and baits not sorted but optimised in maybe a range of other ways and means.
Carp anglers appear extremely vulnerable to expecting bait and tackle companies to produce the new wonder this or that short-cut to instant success. But it is well worth remembering that all these things generally speaking originate with study and observation of the fish themselves and overcoming specific problems and challenges that these constantly adaptive creatures present. In the main these days the major challenge is the fact that anglers baits and tackle actually are conditioning fish to be harder to catch simply because anglers keep on refusing to think truly individually about fish and what influences their behaviours and programmes their responses.
But guess what; anglers baits and tackle are the actual things that are negatively programming fish responses! God knows how many people just do not want to face this fact! Who says that boilies have to be shaped according to whatever shapes the masses will buy or are profitable to produce by machine?
My most successful baits are not heated at all, have very odd feeling textures and surface contours and are as far from being round or any other standard mass-produced machined shaped and extruded format as it is about possible to get! Also my baits on average will last 3 to 6 hours immersion. That is all I want them to last because I want my baits in solution on the water not sitting there intact not actively becoming concentrated solution that seriously pulls triggered feed to feed!
I noticed that some of my friends on Facebook have been asking me about bloodworm and worm and other kinds of readymade boilies etc. They certainly have been hypnotised to think that these are the new wonder baits. Sorry no they are not! Let us go back to basics OK! So you want to make a bait that is soluble, digestible, and instant and gets loads of bites? It is not so complicated but to create a bait that beats more optimised baits, well that really is an art form, but something that anyone can achieve with practice and experience and the right information!
So for example you are addicted to readymade baits? Well try this comparative experiment. Simply get yourself some earthworms, maggots and blast frozen bloodworms. Liquidise the lot and simply bind your liquid (to make a water-soluble paste.) I might suggest Belachan powder, calcium caseinate, soluble fish protein, green-lipped mussel and squid extract, CC Moore Feedstim XP powder, hydrolysed poultry protein and whatever else you might consider worth adding. But I could list dozens of other additives, extracts, fractions, and components etc, each with specific internal and external impacts on carp (and indeed other species like barbel,) that will massively optimise your bait performance and achieve as many bites as possible.
But part of extremely effective homemade bait-making is not just boilies pastes and ground baits of many forms, but in making liquids such as dips to really have significant boosting impacts on readymade baits. I am very much into this aspect and helping more anglers with regard to this as so many appear addicted to using readymade baits today and do not appear to appreciate the incredible power of understanding fish internally to make them behave in your unique favour.
Just depending on readymade baits means you are ignorant of much of this power no matter what your name is. You can always do with more information and understanding to do even better! In a way you might see this situation as akin to the top levels in any other sport or art. For example, the use of just legal drugs to enhance recovery times can mean that some world class athletes will win gold and not come fourth. In the days when Sebastian Coe broke around 9 world records in middle distance running his father actually translated Russian and Eastern European training manuals etc to glean what his extremely scientific engineers eye could regarding maximum uses of oxygen, aerobic and anaerobic running, and how to programme the bodies cells to respond under stress.
Peter Coe produced training regimes and strict schedules of conditioning for each year, each race, each world record attempt, each Olympic Games. As well as doing endless 800 metre practice runs end to end over and over again with short respites between them, Sebastian Coe ran long 5000 metre practice runs repetitively as well as practicing with the top British squad sprint runners running 50 and 100 metres! This extremely specific kind of programming regime meant that his cells in his body were programmed in very specific ways to respond in certain ways under stressful conditions. No drugs were required; he had the basic speed and the rest was constant refinement and conditioning.
My point is that carp are creatures that like us, can be programmed at the cellular level, if just momentarily, or to keep them habitually eating baits with certain internal impacts for example, consistently long-term. It is up to you how much you want to take advantage of this fact to leverage bait far better; and improve your fishing results!
Simply buying bags of readymade bait is very definitely akin to thinking you can achieve miracles with the ingredients of gunpowder, but without the understanding of how each component can be leveraged in combination to maximise numbers of bites when used in certain ways and when treated in certain ways, and applied in various certain fishing conditions to maximum effects to produce the biggest bang! It is inevitable most anglers miracle wonder bag of components is not producing the biggest bang and in most cases for average anglers maybe only a few small puffs of smoke by comparison!
Part of the art of homemade bait making is to create a bait that is functionally massively effective, cheap, and stays functionally intact as long as you need it to.
Part of the problem of the early high protein pastes based around caseins and soluble caseinates was that they were often robbed off hooks by unwanted species. So knowing how to keep bait intact, but keeping solubility and digestibility to maximum levels is extremely vital information!
