Here are some healthy eating guidelines to think about. Following these will help you eat better and enjoy better health.

These guidelines are important because when you eat well, you have more energy, feel better, look better, and enjoy better health. We live such busy lives today and convenience foods are so easy to grab and go, that most of us don't eat as well as we should. We settle for quick and easy which all too often equals fattening and unhealthy.

One of the most basic things to remember is to avoid processed foods and eat more whole foods. What does this mean? If it comes in a package, it probably isn't good for you. Foods in boxes or mixes generally contain too much salt, sugar, and chemical additives. They are also generally high in calories and low in fiber. Whole foods on the other hand, are high in fiber and nutrition. This includes raw vegetables and whole grain breads.

That leads to a related healthy eating tip and that is to eat good carbs and avoid bad ones. What are good carbs? They are made from whole grains so they take longer to convert into blood glucose. They are also called complex carbohydrates and they are found in raw vegetables and raw fruits too. The bad carbs are known as simple carbohydrates. These include sugar and refined flour. Your body converts simple carbs into sugar quickly and causes spikes and crashes that cause you to have food cravings.

In a similar way, there are good fats and bad fats. Healthy eating guidelines include eating the right kind of fat. Limit your intake of saturated fat and choose healthy fats for cooking like olive oil. You can cut down on saturated fat by choosing fat free or low fat dairy products and buying lean cuts of meat.

Another useful tip is to be mindful when you eat. One of the bad habits many of us have is to sit in front of the TV or computer and munch away mindlessly on food. We barely have any recollection of what we eat so we don't feel satisfied by it. If you don't pay attention, you can chug down a whole lot of calories and not even know it. Only eat at the kitchen table. Sit in front of your plate to eat your meal and avoid eating on the run or in your car.

If you need to lose weight, there are a couple of healthy eating guidelines that will help that too. One is to maintain portion control and the other is to choose nutrient dense low calorie food options. Generally speaking, we eat way too much. We drink huge sodas and pile our plates high. Portion control is critical when you need to diet.

A smaller portion means fewer calories and quicker weight loss. There is a way you can be sneaky and eat more though. That's by making wise choices and eating food that is low in calories but packed with nutrition like raw fruits and vegetables, and salads.

These healthy eating guidelines can help you enjoy better health and avoid the weight gain that comes with getting older. It's a matter of paying attention to what you eat and making wise choices, even when you are in a hurry.
