More and more people are opting in to home automation as the systems become more readily available. If you have a PC you may just need to install a little extra software and hardware to have more control in your home. It may seem like science fiction, but it is now possible for you to automate your home and control all of your electronic devices through your computer.
With a PC that has Linux installed and a home automation system you can hook up all of your electronic devices to it. X10 home automation systems are one of the first devices that are made compatible with the Linux software. The X10 home automation system is also one of the best known home automation devices in the world today.
First of all, you need to understand what the X10 is in order to get a better view on how it will work with your Linux software. The X10 home automation system consists of devices that plug in to your electrical outlet which enables you to control any device that is plugged into it. There are also X10 modules that can be integrated into light switches to allow you to remotely control your lights in various rooms. For automated climate control you can even get them installed in climate control devices.
A nifty little unit created by X10 is the firecracker. It plugs into the serial port of your PC and gives you control of all of your X10 devices from the computer. In Linux, the programs called Bottlerocket and GtkX10 will allow Linux programs to control your X10 modules with the electronic equipment plugged in via the Firecracker device.
Another great thing about this Linux add-on is that it's cheap. All you need is a few dollars and you can get the Firecracker, receiver, lamp module and a remote giving you control over all of your installed X10 devices.
Today, other home automation modules are now developing devices that can be attached to the PC and let you control every electronic device in your own home through the Linux program. As there are a many different flavors of Linux some companies are developing devices that are compatible with all of them.
Home automation control can be as simple as a mouse click with Linux on a PC. You also have the ability to install remote control programs on Linux. If you have access to the Internet you will have the ability to control your devices remotely from anywhere in the world.
You can also schedule different automated features in Linux. You can set the time your lights turn on and off and could even schedule the time for your sprinklers to water the garden. You can have the lights to your house come on and have freshly brewed coffee ready once you walk in the door. Of course, having your lights turn on at the moment of your arrival also provides extra security.
You can even pre-program your stereo and your climate control device to turn on at a specific time. You then walk through the door to a comfortable temperature and your favorite tunes playing. No more running around turning everything on and waiting for the room to reach a comfortable temperature. Nothing for you to do but relax.
For cheap home automation you can't go past Linux and the various compatible components available for it. Further software is also required to run on Linux for you to access your electronic devices.
With Linux, home automation software, and a few compatible devices you can create a more comfortable life for yourself. This will change the way you live your life and many people even said that it made them live in a much more comfortable and convenient home.
