Sacramento Movers: How to Avoid a Nightmare Move
When hiring the right Sacramento movers you can relax, knowing the details are handled and your belongings are in good hand. But hire the wrong ones and the nightmare begins.
"Worst nightmare" is an expression commonly used by those who selected the wrong movers. Don't become one of them. Consider these tips:
-
Look at more than cost when hiring a mover. Consider experience, professionalism and reputation.
-
If your move estimate sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Ask about hidden costs.
-
If your contract includes terms only readable with a magnifier, don't sign it.
-
If your movers arrive several days late for pick-up, tell them they broke the contract and you've found another company.
-
If you hear the movers' blaring music as they drive up in a beat-up truck with paper signs taped to the doors, pretend you're not home.
Mary, a 34-year-old single mother of two, only considered cost when hiring Sacramento movers. She would later regret it.
Mary's Move
On moving day Mary tried to occupy her children in the house filled with boxes while waiting hours for the movers to arrive. She finally called the moving company. Someone would return her call as soon as possible, she was told. No one called.
Mid-morning she called again. A gruff voice assured her the truck would arrive shortly. It did not. She called several more times before evening, only getting voicemail.
The next afternoon an old pickup with SACRAMENTO MOVERS scotch-taped to each door arrived. Movers strolled in, unapologetic for being two days past the scheduled pick-up date. Their glares told her not to complain.
Mary cringed as they bumped antique furniture against the walls. She held her breath when one mover tossed a box marked FRAGILE to another. And she sighed helplessly as they crammed her belongings into the truck. She signed their paper and watched them drive away.
Days after the last date of scheduled delivery, the moving truck finally arrived at her new home. "George" handed her the bill, double the cost agreed upon. When Mary refused to pay the additional cost and complained about service received, George sternly informed her they would keep her belongings until she paid the total bill. Then he left.
After an hour on the phone, Mary reluctantly agreed to pay the now even higher bill, which included overnight storage (it was too late to deliver that evening) and another trip to her home. The next day she watched as grubby, unfriendly movers quickly dump her boxes and furniture into one room.
While unpacking, Mary discovered broken china, missing electronics and damaged furniture. Three months passed before the company responded to her claim. Reimbursement at pennies on the dollar would finally end her experience with cheap Sacramento movers.
Avoid a Similar Nightmare
If you're hiring a mover, look for a professional with experience. Read reviews. Ask questions. Know who you're hiring. Don't simply select the cheapest Sacramento movers. The nightmare is not worth it.
