Just a few blocks from the Executive Hotel, Mendoza has an interesting proposal for its visitors form all over the world. Comparable to an actual window to the past of Cuyo region, the museum of the "Pasado Cuyano" exhibits valuable objects and documents that have been part of every moment in the lives of the people of Mendoza, San Juan and La Rioja during the 19th century.
After named Doctor Edmundo Correas, the Cuyo Past Museum, was opened May 24th, in 1967. It was intended to be a place to make the regional history available for the coming generations. Now, the Board of Historical Studies is in charge of this institution, and it is placed in a building declared historical national monument, as it used to belong to Francisco Civit, a former governor of the province of Mendoza.
This museum is rather big. It unfolds over sixteen rooms and four courtyards. When walking through them, History seems to come to life into the diverse environments, evoking historical moments of Cuyo region. Antique furniture, pictorial works, documents and objects are some of the tickets for the train to the 19th century in this region of South America.
History comes to life in this museum, objects and documents from the past remain undamaged and tell a lot about the lives of their former owners. That is such a valuable information, a cherished testimony from other times, which will be treasured by researchers of today and the generations to come in Cuyo region.
One of the many rooms of the Cuyo Past Museum is the archaeological one, next to a lounge about the development of oil industry in Mendoza. The artillery room, the Unitarios and Federales´ hall and the Independencia room are not as visited as the chamber devoted to Liberator Gral. San Martin, where an exact replica of his curved saber can be found.
Besides, it should be mentioned that there is a giant library inside the museum, which contains more than 5000 books and a huge periodicals, and also a great deal of files and documents about Mendoza and its occupants.
When staying at the Executive Hotel in Mendoza, a tour around the Cuyo Past Museum is strongly recommended. You will get a close insight about the roots of one of the most important and influent people in this region of South America.
