Cities are busy entities. It is where the bustle of commercial and social life happens. People commute to cities to work, do business, have fun and entertain their families. Highways are what make this commute possible and fast. However, there are times when a city will need to consider a new highway in its plans. There are signs that a city needs a new highway built. These signs might or might not be so obvious to commuters, but experts and city officials know when it is time to build one by looking at the symptoms.
Growth
Cities grow and evolve. New people move in or out of cities all the time. Many times, people will move closer to where jobs and entertainment are happening. A city that has these important features will have more influx of people commuting or moving to it. This requires looking at population and commuting numbers and patterns. Town officials will determine the need to build a new highway, especially when the current one is over capacity and the amount of commuters going to the city is becoming overwhelming and delaying traffic. Changing or evolving traffic patterns is another important reason.
Age
Another important sign is the age and physical condition of the current primary road. Structural damage and major wear and tear are signs that a town needs to build a new way to commute, especially if the new one will cost less than repairing an old one. It is a matter of space and the town’s budget.
New/Revitalized Complexes
Many times new business complexes are built, or entire urban areas are brought back to life and restored. People start moving back in, working there, and raising families. New streets might be needed to be constructed to get to a new business or living complex, or to a town that has been revamped.
Natural Disaster
Another sadder scenario is the one of natural disasters. Floods, earthquakes, massive tornadoes, or storms might leave an area in complete destruction and its main roads in bad shape. This is another reason to build new roads.
Efficiency
Sometimes, primary highways and roads are fine, but cities need a shorter route to another area or town. In this case, the new road will facilitate commuting and shorten the time it takes to get from one place to the other, making it a primary reason to build a new road. The new way to travel will ease commuting on the other major roads as a secondary benefit.
There are several issues to be taken into consideration when cities decide to open a new way to commute to them; however, it always is a matter of budget and cities need to do what is best for its citizens. Sometimes, the issues fall into building the new highway or avoiding raising the taxes of the citizens.
