When a client is looking to undertake a kitchen remodel project, he or she will often seem overwhelmed by the scope of the process. Kitchen flooring is no exception. With so many new and intriguing products flooding the marketplace, designers have a hefty charge in helping clients make sense of it all. One of the most important features of a kitchen, both aesthetically and functionally, is the material under the homeowner's feet. Clients may select from linoleum, tile, wood, stone, or one of many other choices. Once a few of the other pieces are in place, such as cabinetry, countertops and wall covering colors, flooring can be the final element to tie the entire room together.
Different materials will help convey a given look or style to a kitchen. High-gloss laminates and linoleum can compliment a more contemporary feel, while textured stone tiles can promote an old-world Tuscan look. Traditional kitchen remodels will often utilize an all-wood floor. In this application, the wood can be stained to match molding throughout the home, which will support the home's overall theme.
If a client is concerned with comfort, designers might want to offer a linoleum product to meet that need. Another option, if a different flooring material is desired, is to place rugs in high-traffic areas to provide extra cushioning. Even more than extra comfort, rugs can add an extra design element through their colors and textures.
Another important factor to consider is stain resistance. Linoleum, as well as vinyl and laminate are much more resistant than other flooring materials, such as wood or stone products. If a client selects a wood or stone product, sealers should be applied in order to provide the extra layer of stain protection.
Clients seeking a green remodel project have a larger product offering than ever before, including bamboo, cork and even recycled wood options. Bamboo flooring has a very identifiable look, with a beautiful grain pattern. Most importantly, bamboo grows at a very high rate. In comparison to many other woods used for flooring, bamboo drains far less mineral content from the soil and uses much less irrigation to flourish.
As with any remodeling project, clients will want to incorporate many different design elements in order to create the perfect space. Flooring is a very key component to consider. This one aspect of design style will work to complement cabinetry, countertops and even wall coverings.
